Is Primer Required with SharkThane 4 Hour Dry (Green Label)?
For SharkThane Quick Dry / 4 Hour Dry (Green Label), we strongly recommend using either our SharkGrip Epoxy High Build Primer or our Power Bond Wipe-On Primer. During our hands on training classes, we frequently teach the use of both products together because each serves a different purpose in building a complete professional refinishing system.
Many people assume primer is only about adhesion. While adhesion is certainly important, a quality primer system does much more than simply help the coating stick. Power Bond Wipe-On Primer is designed to create an exceptional molecular bond between the surface and the coating system. It excels on porcelain, ceramic tile, fiberglass, cultured marble, and other difficult substrates. However, because it is a wipe-on product, it adds virtually no film thickness to the system.
A spray-applied epoxy primer serves a different role. In addition to providing excellent adhesion, it builds measurable dry film thickness, helping create a stronger and more durable coating system. The additional film build acts as a reinforcing layer between the substrate and the topcoat.
This is where many refinishers overlook an important point: A coating can have excellent adhesion and still chip. Chip resistance and impact resistance are influenced by more than just adhesion. They are affected by total film thickness, coating structure, flexibility, impact absorption, and overall system design.
By incorporating an epoxy primer beneath SharkThane, impact and chip resistance can be dramatically improved.
The primer acts as a foundation that helps absorb the everyday abuse a refinished surface experiences, including dropped shampoo bottles, razors, cleaning tools, and normal household use. When using Power Bond Wipe-On Primer as a standalone system, we often recommend applying slightly more SharkThane topcoat to compensate for the film build that would normally be provided by a spray-applied epoxy primer. While this does not completely duplicate the benefits of an epoxy primer, it helps increase overall coating thickness and durability.
For maximum performance, our preferred system is:
-
Proper cleaning and surface preparation
-
Power Bond Wipe-On Primer
-
SharkGrip Epoxy High Build Primer
-
SharkThane 4 Hour Dry (Green Label)
This combination provides both molecular bonding and structural reinforcement, resulting in the highest level of adhesion, impact resistance, chip resistance, and long-term durability.
Can SharkThane be applied without an epoxy primer? In some situations, yes. However, professional refinishing is not about doing the minimum required to make a coating stick. It is about building a complete coating system designed to perform for years under real-world conditions.
That philosophy is why SharkGrip Coatings recommends primer as part of every professional refinishing system.
